Everywhere a Sign – Some F Signs From 2018 #AtoZChallenge

(Editor’s Note:  For  my  2019  posts,  I will be posting photos from my travels in 2018.  I visited 26 states and drive over 13,000 miles in 2018.  These posts will feature of few of the road signs and business signs I came across, as well as some stories behind them.  Enjoy the Read and Enjoy the Ride!)

I have a fabulous time on the road whenever I travel.  I find all sorts of fun things and places.  This post features a few F signs I came across in my 2018 travels.

Fairy, Texas

Fairy Baptist Church, Fairy, Texas. Didn’t know Fairies went to church nor that they were Baptist!

Do fairies go to church?  Do they die and get buried.  I am assuming so since I found a Fairy Baptist Church and a Fairy Cemetery in a small community called Fairy, Texas.  I actually came across a road sign pointing to Fairy from the main highway US 281, while heading north to Hico, Texas.  It was about a five mile drive down a narrow TX Highway 219. The town was named for Fairy Fort, the daughter of Confederate Army captain Battle Fort, when the post office was established in 1884.  Though the population of Fairy reached over 150 people by the 1940s, and even had an operating Post Office, by the 21st century the population had dwindled to about 30. The Fairy Cemetery is a historic one and has a nice plaque.  Fairy is now considered a part of Hico.

Flippo’s Auction Gallery, Lexington, Alabama

Every so often I see a sign that I do a double-take and have to turn around to go get a picture.  Sometimes it is the look.  Sometimes it is just the name.  Flippo was too much fun for me.  Was he an unnamed Marx Brother?  (Remember that while in his pajamas Groucho saw an elephant?  He wondered what it was doing in his pajamas and reminded people that the tuscaloosa in Alabama.)

Five Points Road, Cleveland, Alabama

Five Points Road, Cleveland, Alabama

Five Points Road is a long road that connects to US Hwy 231 in Cleveland, Alabama. Not sure why it is called Five Points, but it is a unique name for a road.  I am always on the lookout for fun street names.

Flat, Texas

Flat, Texas is truly in a flat part of the state

This is another one of those towns I just came across in my driving.  Didn’t plan on a visit to Flat.   The town first registered to be called Mesquite Flat, but there was already one, so they submitted Flat and the post office was established in 1897.   As of 2000 there were over 800 people.  I am assuming they don’t want a craft brewery or soda company here….  who wants to drink Flat Beer or Flat Soda.  But a Pancake place would be interesting…imagine having Flat Pancakes!!

Looking for a unique and fun gift for yourself or  your traveler friends? How about a book about offbeat and quirky places to take on your road trips? You can see both of my books at http://amzn.to/2ks6fQZ. Working on Book 3, coming in late Spring 2019!!
