Covered Bridges of Madison County in Iowa[/caption] April 2, 2013: After a good night's rest in Oacoma, we were back on the road heading east with our first planned stop being an early morning visit to the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. View Larger Map - Oacoma, SD to Des Moines, IA Originally built in 1892 as the "Corn Belt Exposition," it became an iconic landmark and attraction in Mitchell after 1921.  Every year the exterior decorations are stripped and a new theme is created. The work is done by local artists.  The 2013 theme is "We Celebrate" and each mural is a depiction of an American holiday.  The artists use 13 different colors or shades of corn to decorate with. Potato Museum - Blackfoot[/caption] While in Rexburg for the last week of March and the first week of April, I had the opportunity to take a couple of trips south to Blackfoot and Idaho Falls, where I was able to catch a few of the interesting sites in the area.  I even caught an amazing quarrel between a Canadian goose and a couple of seagulls. Road Trip to Idaho – Day 1: Lexington, KY to Savage, MN

Sunset in Northern Iowa[/caption] A couple of days ago I was informed I have an opportunity for some work in Idaho, and possibly full time employment.  They want me to come out for two weeks and suggested I drive out instead of fly, especially since they know I love to do that.  So, today (March 8) I drove 848 miles over a 15 1/2 hour stretch, finally arriving in Savage, MN for the night.  Following is the map of the trip: Lexington, KY to Savage MN I left Lexington at about 6 AM and just drove straight through Indianapolis and eventually made my way to Advance, IN.  This is a small town located in Boone County.  I went there because of the name. Sumoflam's Signs[/caption] One of the norms of driving the back roads of America are the town signs.  Anyone that drives any roads typically sees hundreds of them.  Of course, some are pretty typical town names, but, there are many that aren't typical.   Here are a few "descriptive" town name signs that I have picked up along the less beaten paths of America.  I have written about some of these places, but now we can "compare." Boo!! Let's take a Scary adventure

[/caption] Another of the many places of interest in West Virginia is the Scary Creek area. The map on Google does list a Scary, but there are no official signs with the Scary name on them.  But, as you can see below, there are many of other Scary references. The Scary Creek community is located near Nitro, WV (actually, just across the Kanawha River). During the US Civil War, the area that would become Scary, West Virginia was the site of the first Confederate victory in Kanawha Valley, on July 17, 1861. Only, Tennessee[/caption] On a trip to Texas, which included my daunting 18 hour back roads drive from Lexington via Bugtussle, KY thru Bugtussle, TX to Keller, TX (the only documented such trip that I am aware of!! see it here), I found a little village in Tennessee named Only.  It is just a few miles from Bucksnort, TN.  There is not much there, but what I did find was classic!!
