As I returned home from my long nine-day trip across America I wanted to take a quick look back at all the events. Over the course of this trip I have covered 12 states, over 4600 miles, taken almost 2000 photos (including over 100 "selfies" and have seen all kinds of things. The big highlights of this trip were visiting the Paul Bunyan and Big Blue in Bemidji, Minnesota, driving up the Beartooth Mountains in Wyoming/Montana, and hitting Carhenge in Nebraska. Along with these, I saw many other interesting places. I had numerous oddball sites along the way including a pink elephant, big bears, Jackalopes and many other roadside attractions. This trip took me along many US highways as I generally avoided the interstate whenever possible. I was fortunate enough…

The first week of April 2014 provided a great fun time for my wife and I as we went to Cincinnati for a weekend getaway.  The main reason was to see my good friend Antsy McClain perform with a new "Trailer Park Troubadours" band that included amazing Aussie musician Pauly Zarb and the fabulous finger picking virtuoso Pat Kirtley and his brother.  We decided to make a weekend of it and visit a few places around Cincy that we have not seen yet. Our first stop in town was a place that I have wanted to visit for quite a while.  Called the "Mushroom House," it is truly one of the quirkiest places in the city.  The Mushroom House is located in the Hyde Park District of the city at…

Recently I was assigned by a client to look into the creation of a SmugMug website. I had to do some testing on it, but in the process I created my own SmugMug site. This site has hundreds of photographs that I've taken on my travels around the country, in Canada, in Japan, and in the Philippines. Sumoflam's Weird & Wonderful America I have not always focused on just the unique and offbeat, but I also have visited many national parks, many scenic wonderlands, have focused on animal life, flowers and trees, and other unique and interesting places and things. My new SmugMug site will feature a great variety of all of these photographs. I hope you'll give it a visit and Enjoy the Ride!!

The Bourbon Barrel Project on Town Branch – Lexington, KY

Backroads Discoveries, Horse Art, Kentucky, Street Art
In September 2013 the downtown streets of Lexington were littered with 41 whiskey barrels...colorfully painted ones to be exact.  The LexArts Organization introduced this unique public art event entitled "The Bourbon Barrel Project on Town Branch" which celebrated not only the history and lore of Kentucky's bourbon, but also the chronicle of a long-buried stream that was a formative basis of historic Lexington, the Town Branch.  Alltech, Inc. recently opened a new Bourbon Distillery in Lexington called Town Branch Bourbon, and the charred, white oak barrels used in these displays come from this new distillery. I had the opportunity one morning to drive around downtown Lexington and grab shots of a number of these barrels, trying to get them in the setting of the city more than the straight artwork. …

Louisville and Jeffersonville: Ohio River Sisters

Backroads Discoveries, Birds, Bridges, Car Art, City Skylines, Family Travel, Giant Things, Indiana, Kentucky, Large Statues, Mythical Creatures, Train Bridges, Unexpected Discoveries, Unique Places, Vintage Neon, Wall Art
Two different cities and a shared river and bridge.  In September 2013 one of my daughters and her friends needed some assistance getting to Louisville and had some business to take care of.  So, with camera in hand, we were off and they did their stuff while I drove around Louisville and then across the river to Jeffersonville.  Here are a few the things I saw in a three hour jaunt thru two towns.... This stretch of the Ohio River is the widest and deepest part (about 23 feet) of the Ohio River. A drive down West Main Street in downtown Louisville offers a number of interesting sights.  You pass by the Art and Museum District of town.  Perhaps the biggest and most interesting site is the amazing Giant Louisville…

Creating the Wanderlust – 30 Years of Family Travel – Pt 3

This is the last in my 3 part series on "Creating the Wanderlust" through family travel adventures. (see the other two Part 1  Part 2 ) After three weddings in 2005 I was fried...and, to top things off I had knee surgery later in the year, so there was no travel the rest of that year.  In fact, I didn't take any trips until 2007 when I had a couple of big ones.  These were with Solomon as Seth was off serving a Mormon mission in Utah.  Then, since that time many of the trips from 2008 thru 2013 have included grandchildren in one way or another.  It is wonderful to share these precious moments with my grandchildren as well as my now adult children.... In June 2007 my sister…

New Wall Art in Lexington, KY – Part II More PRHBTN works completed

Backroads Discoveries, Eateries, Giant Things, Horse Art, Kentucky, Mythical Creatures, Roadside Attractions, South Dakota, Unexpected Discoveries, Unique Places, Wall Art
A few days ago I posted about a number of new and recent murals that now grace the walls of buildings in Lexington (see the post here).  Some of these, including the massive Lincoln mural, are part of the annual PRHBTN celebration of art forms that have been criminalized, marginalized, and under-appreciated in the mainstream.  In the past week since the completion of the Lincoln project, four other giant works have been completed by three different urban artists including Phlegm from Britain, GAIA from Baltimore, and Odeith, from Portugal.  All of these works are just a tad off the beaten path, but well worth seeking out. This mural is painted on the side of the old Rescue Mission wall by the railroad tracks on Limestone near Loudon Ave. The horses…

New Wall Art in Lexington, Kentucky – PRHBTN and LexArts

Backroads Discoveries, Giant Things, Horse Art, Kentucky, Mythical Creatures, Roadside Attractions, Unexpected Discoveries, Wall Art
Sometimes there can be a treasure trove in your own backyard.  In the past few months Lexington, Kentucky has been the recipient of some new and amazing wall art...all fairly large projects, including an amazing HUGE piece on the back of the Kentucky Theatre.  And there will be more on the way -- all part of the PRHBTN Project in Lexington. According to it's Website, "PRHBTN is an annual celebration of art forms that have been criminalized, marginalized, and under-appreciated in the mainstream, featuring an exhibition of these works in a space that complements the raw, powerful nature of the message and the artistry of each piece." In September 2012 German artists Jasmin Siddiqui and Falk Lehman (jointly known as HERAKUT) came to Lexington on commission to fill their canvas (an entire…
